A Vision Realised: isarak.me
Over the past several months, I've embarked on a journey that blends professional ambitions with personal reflection: creating a robust digital home for my academic work. This isn't merely about assembling a profile or portfolio; it's about weaving the diverse elements of my work — teaching, research, service, awards and personal reflections — into a tapestry that genuinely represents who I am.
Previously, my online presence felt scattered, residing across various professional platforms including my profile page on the UNE website, LinkedIn, ORICID, Academia, ResearchGate and Twitter. While functional and visible, this fragmentation lacked intentionality. I envisioned a space that could evolve with me, encapsulating my interests and offering students, colleagues and collaborators a vivid picture of my work and motivations.
The Genesis of isarak.me
The aspiration for a cohesive digital presence culminated in the creation of isarak.me. What you see — the integrated research and teaching sections, the streamlined blog — is the result of a deeper story: the meticulous process of building, refining and re-imagining an academic website to truly reflect my vision.
The Process Behind the Scenes
This endeavor would not have been possible without Louis Bourne, a high-school friend since 2005. Louis translated my initial design brief into a platform far more elegant and functional than I had envisioned. He managed every aspect — from the site's architecture and design to backend, frontend and integration elements — with incredible finesse. My present task involves content creation, a process made remarkably intuitive by his work.
Clarity of purpose is the common thread in planning, design and systems thinking.
Collaborating with Louis, which initially began with the Figma draft shown in the top image, reinforced a lesson I often impart to my students: great planning and design spring from clarity of purpose and ongoing two-way communication and feedback. Louis exemplified this ethos, transforming my complex requests into elegant, seamless functionality and presentation.
Exciting Features and Technical Mastery
One of the gratifying aspects of this project is seeing the site's growth beyond my initial vision. Among the noteworthy features Louis implemented are:
- AI-driven blog management system
- Integrated management of research, teaching and awards
- Customisable visibility controls
- A seamless, intuitive contact interface
The site runs on a tech stack incorporating a custom Rails app, PostgreSQL, SASS, StimulusJS and Bootstrap. While I may not fully grasp the entire stack's technical depth, its sophistication is evident in its performance. Additionally, integrations with Google Search and PostHog for analytics offer valuable insights into user engagement.
A Continuous Journey
Louis does not view this as a finite project but as an ongoing collaboration. He continues to refine isarak.me, often predicting enhancements that align with my evolving needs. His roadmap includes future developments including AI-driven workflows, scroll-triggered animations, redesign for research PDF downloads, an RSS feed, newsletter opt-ins and tools for draft autosave, post-view analytics and bulk publishing.
In essence, isarak.me is not static; it's a living, evolving reflection of my academic journey. The Foundation of a Long-standing Friendship
Beyond its technical achievements, this project underscores the enduring value of friendship. Louis and I have taken diverse paths over the years, yet collaborating on this site rekindled the trust and camaraderie of our early days. I'm deeply grateful for his patience, skill and generosity throughout this journey.
A Personal Cornerstone
In the ever-changing landscape of academia — where courses shift, roles change and digital footprints vanish — having a personal website offers continuity and autonomy. It's a sanctuary where my work breathes independently of institutional ties and where I can engage in thoughtful reflection beyond the hustle of social media.
